My 10 Fave Pet Store Products

I'm cheap. That's not bad. A number of rat products can be made, or an inexpensive (or even better!) alternative found in Home Depot or the grocery store. Or on the street during bulk pickup night. I like to think that while I work in advertising, I'm not a victim.

But there are some pet brands that do have my loyalty and they get my dollar. Spend a little extra for these superior products at your pet store. And remember: patronize only those stores that treat rats right!

1. Nilodor: Dog trainers know about this. It doesn't just mask odors, it neutralizes them. I once had a tom cat get into my basement and spray all over - the place smelled like the lion house at the Bronx Zoo. I was out of my mind because I couldn't POSSIBLY empty out the cellar and clean. Two drops of Nilodor did the job.

You buy it in a tiny bottle for about $7. Here's how you use it: you put one drop wherever the air comes into the room: the window sill, the door jamb. It smells floral for awhile and then completely clears the air. The other way to use it is to add 3 drops per quart to your wash water. This is THE SAME FORMULA that is used in any of the expensively diluted compound deodorizing products you find. I have even added a drop to the laundry. Never be without this product. Buy 2: one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom/laundry room.

2. Milk Bone Dog Biscuits: You could make this your base dry diet. Good for the toofies. With some Milk Bones in the freezer, you are never out of rat food.

3. Hartz Ph5 Clay Cat Litter: I litterbox train with this. SIFT IT!

4. Scratchex Flea and Tick Powder for Cats. You gotta be careful using dusts around rats because it affects their lungs. Every now and then, I sprinkle this around the edges of the bottom pan on cage cleaning day.

5. Scratchex Flea Soap for Cats or Pine Tar Soap: Because it dries their skin, especially their tails, only wash your rats if they absolutely need it. Yeah, they'll howl that they hate getting a bath. But when it's all done, they feeeel soooooo goooooood.

6. Corona Hoof Dressing: I'm talking about THIS EXACT PRODUCT. There is no substitute. Its primary ingredient is Lanolin/Sheep Wool Fat. Other "similar" products like Bag Balm list petrolatum as their first ingredient: that's Vasoline petroleum jelly. Corona is great for treating all wounds and cuts of all carbon-based life forms: the sheep fat promotes healing and prevents scarring. It's not cheap but Corona is amazing stuff, don't be without it!
