Have you ever wondered what "type" of rat you have? Or have you ever gotten confused hearing some one say they recently adopted a rat that is a Mink Capped Blazed Odd-eyed Dumbo? Well, let me see what I can do to clear up some of that confusion!
First, you need to understand that rats are rats! There are not different breeds of rats when it comes to our loveable pets; however there are many, many different types of varieties. Ok, so with that established, all rats have ears, right? RIGHT! There are two ear types that rats have:
- One is standard ears in which their ears are placed high on their head and positioned more behind their eyes.
- The other type is dumbo ears. These ears are set to the sides of the rats head behind their eyes and are in low position.
So with that said, you should be able to look at your rats ears and say either, "I have a dumbo rat!" or "My rat has standard ears."
Next we'll talk about four different types of rats. As a rule, most rats have smooth fur, however there are some rats who are exceptions to that rule! Rex and Hairless rats have grown in popularity in the past several years.
- A Rex rat appears to have curly/wavy fur, which is concentrated and dense over the body; except for the belly, which may not be as curly/wavy.Rex rats have curly whiskers too!This type of rat can be found in most any marking/color.
- A Double Rex rat is very similar to a Rex, but it has a much thinner coat of fur and the fur feels more like a soft brillo pad.This type of rat can be found in most any marking/color.
- A Hairless rat needs Rogaine!No, seriously a hairless rat is just that - HAIRLESS!Some may have a slight covering of "peach fuzz" in spots on their body. Their skin is very wrinkly (think SharPei dogs), their ears tend to be on the large side, and the have short curly whiskers.
- Patchwork Hairless rats are a really interesting type of rat that is hard to come by.A true patchwork has patches of fur that grows in and falls out in random spots all over their body.Patchworks can be found in most any color.
Rats eyes come in a variety of different colors.The fur color of the rat determines what color a rats eyes are.Most lighter colors have either pink or red eyes. Darker colors are either ruby or black. Have you ever seen a dog with two different colored eyes?Well, guess what? Rats can have two eye colors too!
