Fur Rat by Joan Brown
1962, Berkeley Art Museum

This is a cool sculpture with the greatest facial expression -- click on the photo to see a larger picture. The artist says the tail is supposed to be "menacing", but I think it's awfully cute. Just a matter of taste, I guess... Here's the view from the other side, which is not the sculpture's better side at all.

RPG Rat by Rebecca Kemp
1998, Artist's collection

Here's an adorable guy that I just couldn't resist adding in. There's something about that wistful face....

Rat Cartoons by Michael Cammer
Artist's collection

Two cute cartoons featuring rats! Everyone knows that pizza goes best with extra rats, and I love the Uni-rat idea, but it could turn teeth-cleaning into a dangerous hobby! In an interview on his site, Cammer states that he's done a whole collection of rat drawings. Do you think they'll make it to a local gallery anytime soon?

The Rat-Catcher and His Dogs by Thomas Woodward
1824, Tate Gallery

This cheerful-looking rat-catcher is probably the same sort of man as Jack Black, who was partially responsible for fueling the rat fancy in England. He's very protectively sitting next to the two rats in his cage, blocking them from being scared by the cat and distracting the two dogs. One of the rats is calm enought to sit up and curiously sniff the air. Is he saving them to give to some gentlewoman for pets or are they going to be entertainment in the rat pits that night? Probably shouldn't ask...

Rat-King by Katharina Fritsch
1993, Dia Center for the Arts

I love this sculpture. If I could afford it, I'd buy it up and move into a house big enough to keep it! I wonder if Fritsch would make a smaller reproduction? If only rats were really that big... *sigh*
