Rats and Mice in Native American Lore

Why Blackfeet Never Kill Mice

This story is from the e-version of a 1915 collection of Blackfeet, Chippewa and Cree legends by Frank B. Linderman. It is the tale of one small rodent who outwitted all the other larger animals and then had the wisdom(?) to chose man to be the chief of them all. So, that is why these clever, humble animals deserve our respect. "Even small people can be good friends, you know - remember that." Good lesson!
