There are lots of famous poems about dogs, cats, horses, etc., but rat poetry? Well, rats may have a long way to go to catch up, but they're off and running fast! Here's a list of some of my favorite sites on the web to go for a rattie poem fix.
Horace's Poetry http://www.corpex.com/users/akademia/hor... This is my all-time favorite rat poetry site. Horace speaks to the rat in all of us with such classics as On the Possibility of Winning the National Lottery and A Poem about Going up People's Sleeves. And, of course, who could forget his classic short but oh-so-poignant A Love Poem: that Freya's a bit of all right Lisa's Poetry Page http://www.xs4all.nl/~tirion/poetry.html Not only does she rescue tons of needy ratties, but she also writes some terrific poetry! Lisa's poetry commemorates many of the rats she has known and loved. If I had to choose, I'd say the touching Ode to Frodo is my favorite. Also on the page are poems by lots of other rat owners. Here's a sample from The Snack Taken: Two snacks emerged from my ratty hoard, The Mudcat Café http://www.mudcat.org/threads.cfm This site is home to a terrific folk song database with a super search engine! If you do a search for rat, you'll find that rats have been popular subjects of folk music for a long, long time. The earliest one I found was a ballad from 1731 in which a rat makes off with someone's Band-Aid ("plaister" in the song) - a habit which many rats indulge in to this day. My absolute favorite of the bunch is Emily's Animals which has the following verse: I have a little pet, my pet's name is Pat Two of my other faves at this site are Intoxicated Rat and Happy Family. The Poetry Archives http://library.thinkquest.org/3247/index... This site looks to be still under construction, but has a long list of poetry available for perusal. Unfortunately the search engine isn't too good, but if you know what you're looking for, things are not hard to find. It's worth a visit to read the full text of Robert Browning's wonderful version of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, which includes the following delightful verse: Go To Page: 1 2
