Fun and Games on the Web

There are tons of serious resources for rat fans available on the web. But this week we're not going to look at those. Let's go play instead!

Muizenval Screen Saver

http://www.centraalbeheer.nl/corporate/f...

This is a Dutch site with several different screen savers. Don't worry, a working knowledge of the language is not necessary to download or install them! Just click on overzicht, select Muizenval from the list and download. Installing it is easy. When activated, rats run across your screen until you shoot at them with plungers. If you hit one, it will get angry with you and do something very nasty to your computer, which you can get out of by wiggling the mouse or by hitting a key. Have fun with this one!

Naked Mole-Rat Colony Cam

http://www.si.edu/organiza/museums/zoo/h...

Well, okay, they're not traditional pet rats, but neat to watch all the same! This is one of the better "cam" sites on the web. They've included links to send video postcards as well as to find out more than you ever wanted to know about naked mole rats, those so-ugly-they're-cute little "hot dogs with teeth." The downside is that sometimes no one's home, but you can try viewing the past 5 or 10 frames and you're bound to see a mole rat wander through somewhere. Also you can open a mini window on your screen so you can keep watching them while you work or you can go visit some of the National Zoo's other animals. A very cool site!

Rat in Maze

http://www.cis.syr.edu/~kraj/java/RatInM...

In this maze, the goal is to help the rat get to his home by strategically arranging bits of cheese. The maze changes each time, and you can vary the difficulty level. Just be careful you don't run out of cheese too soon.... Fun for everyone!

Rat Maze

http://www.sce.carleton.ca/netmanage/jav...

This applet supposedly simulates real rat behavior using a virtual rattie equipped with a "neurosolver." (I don't think my rats are quite this dumb, however!) The maze can be arranged to varying levels of difficulty, and you can even "train" the rat. This is my 6-year-old daughter's favorite online rat maze.

Rats Memory Game

http://www.icubed.com/users/mfichten/rat...

Turn over the cards to match cute rattie pictures and see who gets the most matches. It's fun to play once, but the next time the rats are all still in the same spots. Not terribly challenging, but good to play with younger kids who like lots of repetition.
