Top Ten Dog Breeds

Each year, The American Kennel Club reports on the top 50 breeds registered with their Club.

In 2000, the top ten were:

Labrador Retriever with 172,841 registered

Golden Retriever with 66,000 registered

German Shepherd with 57,660 registered

Dachshund with 54,773 registered

Beagle with 52,026 registered

Poodle with 45,868 registered

Yorkshire Terrier (up from 9th in 1999) with 43,575 registered

Chihuahua (down from 7th in 1999) with 43,096 registered

Boxer (up from 10th in 1999) with 34,998 registered

Shih Tzu (up from 11th in 1999) with 37,599 registered
