Some Enchanted Evening

Pet sitting can be a wonderful business where you meet and care for loving pets and their sometimes eccentric owners. This story is one of many funny encounters I had with customers.

It was the end of a long, tiring day, when I received a call from a very desperate cat owner. She had to leave unexpectedly for a business trip and needed a sitter.

Before agreeing to accept a new customer, it was customary for me to go to her home for an initial consultation. She didn't have the time; she was leaving in three hours and begged me to watch her cat. How hard could it be?

To make a long story short, it had snowed that day, making travel a bit tricky. When I finally arrived at her home, Becky greeted me with a very warm welcome and a "cat" mug of hot chocolate. Her home was warm and inviting, a fire was burning in the fireplace and there was a colorful, homemade crocheted blanket draped over the arm of the couch. To add to this Norman Rockwell scene, there was a saucepan of potpourri simmering on the stove.

Her cat, appropriately named Snowball, was a beautiful white angora with piercing green eyes. Snowball was a gift given to Becky by her grandmother and she treasured her.

Taking notes on the instructions pertinent for Snowball's care, I asked Becky if there was anything at all I needed to know about Snowball other than the information she had already provided. She smiled when she explained that sometimes it's hard to get Snowball in from outside but that she had a trick.

I explained that I wasn't comfortable letting cats out loose when their owners were away, but she assured me that her method of getting Snowball back inside worked every time.

The anticipation was killing me, and I had to know her secret. She told me what I had to do was.....sing. And not just any song. I had to sing "Some Enchanted Evening" as loud as I could. Needless to say, I was skeptical. But she was willing, and eventually did give me a demonstration.

We let Snowball out, and after some time when she refused to come in, Becky sang. I looked around to see if the neighbors were looking, but they, I guess, were accustomed to the live entertainment they received from their neighbor. After a few bars, Snowball trotted right back into the house.
