Where Are You Now and Where Are You Going?

Sometimes, when we think about a goal we want to achieve, we do so with the view that achievement is a long way off. Our attitude is often, "Someday . . . ."

But from that viewpoint, it is easy to make excuses for why we are not where we want to be. "It would take too long." "It's not worth the effort." "Why bother?" These excuses are surefire motivation-killers.

If you really want something, you will act to get it. You don't have to wait until the kids grow up, until you lose weight, until you have more money, or any other "waiting-game" excuse.

In thinking about a goal you want to achieve, stop thinking about where you wish you were. Instead, focus on where you are right now.

You have skills, knowledge, talent, and a powerful mind. You have access to resources, tools, and aids. Write down these capacities and resources to make them seem to come alive for you.

Next, think about what you are doing now. Are you performing actions that use these capacities and resources that you have written down? Are the things you are doing geared toward your goal?

Perhaps you see that what you thought you wanted is not something you really want. Perhaps a new goal comes to mind. Perhaps you still have the same goal.

In any case, you must determine what specifically you can do differently that would set you on a course toward your goal. Devise step-by-step actions based on what you determine you can be doing differently. Clear a path from where you are now to where you want to be by writing down these steps.

Finally, perform these actions, step by step by step by step. Congratulate yourself after each one. Watch your capacities and resources expand. Feel your attitude switch from a dreamy "Someday . . . " to a more resolute "Now!"

For now is the time to act from where you are, with what you have. All successful people started out that way, and they continue to operate that way. You can too!

What are you waiting for?
