Dr. Susan C. Rempel is the director of UnCommon Courtesy & Coaching (UCC), a web site devoted to providing motivational resources.

Personal Development: UnCommon Courtesy & Coaching is an interesting name. What exactly is UCC? What makes it unique?

Susan Rempel: I am often asked about the origin of the title of my web site. As a result of my work, I have spent much time thinking about how people in our society behave toward one another. There seems to have been a movement away from treating other group members with respect, presenting oneself in a dignified manner, and the general use of common courtesies.

The title grew out of my desire to help people improve the facets of their lives that involve their interaction with others. The areas that I focus on include helping people to conduct themselves in a dignified manner, learn to treat others with respect, improve their interpersonal skills, examine their value systems, and consider how their values impact their success in life, expand and deepen their relationships with others, and live a positive life.

Does that seem like a tall order for one person? Perhaps! But I truly believe the personal growth exercises that I publish in my newsletter can help people examine how and why they choose to move through their lives in the manner that they do. If I can achieve my goal, then I will help people to live in a rather uncommon as well as courteous manner!

PD: How does your background relate to your reason for founding UCC?

SR: I have worked with families in the midst of divorce or child custody issues for more than a decade. It is a rewarding, but very draining, area of work. After the birth of my oldest child, I decided that I wanted to change the focus of my career to something that would allow me to help other people see the positive side of life.

By nature, I am a very positive person who is able to find something good in almost every event. My life has taken a number of very negative turns (including the death of my parents and siblings), but I think it is important to focus on the positive things that we have each been given. I believe that I can help a large number of people through the vehicle of my newsletter, the personal growth exercises that I offer to others, and other services that I hope to provide in the future.
