This article regards "mental health" in the sense of "intellectual capacity" or "cerebral soundness." It does not address psychiatric disorders.
Reading lets your mind decode, discriminate, comprehend, interpret, and interact. Your curiosity is aroused, your intellect is challenged, and your mind is nourished. If you or someone you know needs help with learning to read, visit the Literacy Volunteers of America. 2. Write. The act of writing something down stimulates your mental processes. Writing down goals and to-do lists provides us with a way to clarify and organize our thoughts. Some people like to keep journals and diaries as a way of releasing thoughts and emotions. Writing in this capacity is an excellent way to improve your powers of observation and recall. 3. Memorize. When it comes to memory, "use it or lose it" is a fair recommendation. The more you use your power of memory, the better you are at remembering things. Try memorizing written to-do lists, shopping lists, or affirmations, referring to notes as necessary. The act of writing something down stimulates the memory. You can also try associating one thing with another to jog your memory. 4. Do "brain games." Whether mathematical, scientific, or logical in nature, brain games help sharpen your mental clarity. Such games might take the form of crossword puzzles, acrostic or cryptic puzzles, graphic illusions, or "brain teasers" that challenge the mind. Performing these types of puzzles and games is a fun way for you to keep your mind focused and challenged. 5. Enjoy music. Historically, music has always been a part of joyful celebrations as well as solemn occasions. Only more recently have we learned that music therapy can help decrease stress, stimulate the immune system, and aid in memory. You can experience the positive effects of music by listening to it, playing an instrument, dancing, or singing.
