Get and Stay Motivated! Part 2

Tom Puderbaugh, professional speaker and author of Change Your Life…and Do It Now!, offers some valuable and sensible advice about staying motivated in part 2 of this interview.

Personal Development (PD): What are some ways people can keep themselves motivated?

Tom Puderbaugh: Here are some tips to stay motivated:

  • Write your goals down. This is a real secret among high-performing men and women. Just the act of committing goals to paper helps to cement and formalize them in our minds.

  • Review your goals often. I think daily is best. Keep your goals handy and review them right at the beginning of your day. It will help you stay focused.

  • Some goals are big and almost overwhelming. If the fear factor of an overwhelming goal is ruining your motivation, break the goal down into small pieces. Take baby steps toward your goal. It won't seem so scary that way.

  • Tell someone about your goals. Tell a trusted friend so that they can watch you for a lapse or set-back. Everyone is going to "fall off the wagon” from time to time. But having a trusted friend there to say, "I thought you we're trying to lose weight" (when they see you reaching for the ice cream, again!) can make all the difference.

  • Give yourself small rewards frequently when you accomplish your "baby steps." You will have something to look forward to along the way toward your ultimate goal.

PD: What about reading inspirational or motivational messages?

Tom: A daily dose of something positive is very important to keep us focused on our goals. In fact, a daily dose of positive thinking has the power to change lives! Every day, we are bombarded with negative messages almost everywhere we turn. People need a quick shot of something upbeat, uplifting, and encouraging. And the neat thing is, it works!

I see my role as that of a coach cheering you on. You CAN do it--be happy, change your life, live your dreams--but the best way to begin is to feed yourself some positive "mental protein" every day.

Hey, let's be realistic--we can't always control who we associate with. We may have negative family members or co-workers. But everyone CAN get a motivational shot-in-the-arm every morning to help overcome and ignore the negative influence of these types of people.

Here is one of my all-time favorite quotes:

"The best way to have a friend . . . is to be one."
