How many computers are enough? My father used to tell me of a time when his family didn't have a car. That was really hard for me to comprehend. Today most families not only have one car, but many have several cars in their driveway. Like the present of the automobile, the computer is making its presence felt strongly in our society. Not so long ago the computer was considered something of a luxury, or plaything. Now the trend is toward making it a practical part of our home life. Our children and youth are using it for a variety of things including some school work. Mom and Dad probably balance the checkbook and do e-mail with it. With the increase and improvement of Internet activities we now have chat rooms, personal web pages, and even purchases we can do with the computer. The problem now is not whether we have a computer, but who gets to use it. Unlike the TV and many other home activities, computer use is basically a single-person situation. Sure, there are games which have dual joysticks, and two people can participate in those. However, the majority of computer activities are single-person events. The increase in the number of persons desiring to use the computer, and the variety of activities which can be accomplished with it, have put a strain on many families. Schedules have to be worked out to get each member their time on the computer. Often that is very difficult to arrange. Because of these things the movement in many families is not only to have one computer in the home, but having more than one. Take note of the articles written about, and the hardware being sold for networking home computers together. These are strong indicators that the computer has bypassed the time of being a luxury at home. It now seems that the issue isn't whether the computer needs to be a part of our home life, but how many of them we will have! Make it a good day! Ross P.S. if you have used home networking or would like to, please give some feedback - either in dialog below or by e-mail! Thanks!!
