Call It Poetry / Tonight : An experiment in performance poetry

Mar 29, 2000 - © Billy Marshall Stoneking

an introduction. As he completes his long-winded and very funny "intro", the poets - who have assembled themselves on chairs behind the MC – rise in hopeful expectation of being "the poet of whom he speaks - the poet who needs no introduction". As they stand the stage lights go out, and when they come back on again, the show's theme song plays through the house speakers, the poets take their bows, and the show is over.

As the audience files out, it slowly dawns on them that what they have been waiting for is a poetry reading and that just as it was about to begin, it is over... and yet...

I like the idea of giving an audience a reading without them knowing that that is what they're getting. And from the audience's point of view, I think they prefer it that way.

Call It Poetry / Tonight was the subject of an ABC-TV documentary which has been screened nationally in Australia and Southeast Asia. An excerpt from the script will appear here within the next day or so.
