F is for Farfugium

F is for farfugium
Farfugium Varieties
Farfugium japonicum 'Argenteum'
The leaves are cream and grey variegated in broad stripes, sometimes half the leaf is coloured. This is not as hardy as many of the forms. The flowers are orange-yellow. This is very nice in combination with a winter-tinged Pig's Squeek such as the bronze-leaved Bergenia cordata 'Bressingham Ruby', which flowers pink in spring.

Farfugium japonicum 'Aureomaculatum'
Large rounded dark green leaves with spotting that looks like someone hit it with splashes of bleach.

Farfugium japonicum 'Crispatum'
These have lovely big evergreen crispy curly leaves with a grey-brown felted top, occasionally tinged with white and pink edges. This doesn't prosper that well and is one of the more difficult varieties to grow.

Farfugium japonicum 'Gigantea'
Very large glossy evergreen foliage to 1 foot across, and yellow flowers.

Farfugium japonicum 'Kinkan'
Large angular leaves with a thin bright variegated edge. A very nice companion for ferns. The yellow flowers arise in late autumn but not that reliably.
