UPDATED: Favourite Seed Companies

J.L Hudson

This is my favourite seed company, mainly because of the oddities offered. For example, there are 30 varieties of Eucalyptus in the 1999 catalog. The range of perennials is astounding, most of which are quite rare and unusual. The catalog is excellent, well worth the dollar, with it's quotes from famous people such as Aesop, Peter Kropotkin, Malcolm X, in every available margin. The seed packet sizes are very generous for the cost. Also, this company ships all over the world and has a long, faithful history of doing so. In all the catalog and supplemental updates are an illustrious read and the service and products have never let me down.

Seeds-by-Size

Figuring out this catalog is a bit stressful at first but the charts and graphs all make sense in the end resulting in a very very good deal and lots of very interesting selections.

Dowdeswell's Delphiniums

Most of the delphiniums this company breeds and offers for sale are Delphinium elatum types. That is the tall majestic English Delphinium Hybrid, far superior to the regular 'Pacific Hybrids' which are commonly available. Hooray for the specialty seed company!

Johnny's Selected Seeds

Johnny's is good because they have kept up with stocking a good range of 'bread and butter' perennials in bulk quantities for commercial growers, those commonly grown types you couldn't really do without, and also expanded well into other areas of sales such as ornamental grasses. I believe they are best known for their vegetables but should also be noted for their astounding selection of herb seed. The lack of latin names on some areas of their website is a bit irritating but excusable seeing as most of these are common enough to be easily recognized and the place is still under development. What makes this company really good is that they are in the U.S. but will ship outside the U.S. with no problems.

S.E.P.I. (Semences et Plantes Internationales)

This Quebec company has lots of different hardy perennials for sale including more and more different and rare plants. UPDATE Feb 08 2002
There is now a link to an English version of the site, but in my opinion selection has gone down slightly.

Silverhill Seeds

South African seeds, many bulbs, perennials and rare plants, or at least rare to us. I have not ordered seeds from this company personally but my place of work does and they are very happy with what they have received.
