Deer-Resistant Perennials Part 2

  • Lamiastrum galeobdolon - Any of these false nettles are safe. Look for 'Hermans Pride', which is nice. False nettles have yellow flowers. The Lamiums which have pink or white flowers, are not safe around deer at all. Likes all kinds of shade.
  • Smilacina racemosa - False Soloman's Seal. This takes deep shade and makes a great understory perennial with ferns.
  • Vinca minor - Periwinkle is a rapidly spreading groundcover. It needs to be trimmed back annualy to control it's spread, but other than that is virtually maintenance free.
  • Ferns

With this list, you can create a lovely garden under the shade of trees or on the north side of a wall that deer won't touch. There are others you can try too, but this comprises those which are most reliable in all regions.
