Chinese culture developed very early as an agrarian society, one which relied and for the most part still relies heavily on common sense, agriculture and knowing how nature works.
The calender is based on the moon cycle, but the name of the month changes on a solar cycle.

Gardening by the Moon
The period from the new moon to the full moon is also known as when the moon is waxing, or increasing. This is known as a good time for leaf development.

The period from the full moon to the new moon is known as the time when the moon is waning or decreasing. This time is said to be best for root development.
- sow seeds and plant root crops
- prune to discourage growth (includes mowing the lawn)

- plant biennials
