Should I Call You Dad or Grandad?

A friend of mine pointed something very important out to me about Lot and the consumption of Sodom. The angel said to Lot as he was evacuating him out of the city, "Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither." The Lord was ever faithful to his servant Abraham who had interceded for Lot and his family asking the Lord not to destroy the righteous with the wicked. The Lord was committed to showing mercy to Lot and honoring Abraham's request. May we strive to be like Abraham walking with the Lord and interceding for our fellows! And if we unhappily find ourselves in the position of Lot, may we wisely see to it that we befriend and Abraham.

Another valuable lesson to us is the way the angels received the hospitality of Lot and Abraham. The angels readily stayed with Abraham, but when it was night they declined Lot's offer and had to be persuaded to stay with him. This is a sad commentary on the state of Lot's relationship with the Lord. While Lot was a child of God and forgiven as Abraham was, he was not in a state of fellowship with God. His heart was not with God and he did not love the things of God. We are forced to examine our own lives and ask first of all is God welcome in my home, and if so, would he feel at home?

Finally we come to the sad, sad end of Lot's testimony. Leaving Zoar being afraid for his own life, he and his two daughters headed for the mountains (where God had wanted him to go in the first place) only to find him impregnating his own daughters in a drunken stupor. The culture demanded that in order to secure any social status, one must have sons to carry on the name and to inherit the wealth. Lot's daughters were alone with no worldly possessions and only a cave to dwell in. Sadly, Lot had also robbed them of a godly heritage giving them only the morals of Sodom. They got their father drunk and slept with him. Their children were Moab and Benammi, the father of the infamous enemies of Israel, the Moabites and the Ammonites.

It is possible for a man (or woman) to be saved and be so far from God that there is no indication of His presence in his life. Although they do not lose Heaven, they forsake a multitude of his blessings including but not limited to their children, their family and their fellowship with God. God is always faithful to pursue them and to deliver them even by force, and to welcome them into His arms should they ever come to their senses and return to him. Those that find themselves out of fellowship with their Father need not to be afraid that he will accept them. The Bible's faithful also testify of times when they did not believe God and later repented. God's love is not about our faithfulness or our loveliness, but God's unconditional goodness. We can all thank God for that.
