Global peace. . .mankind united under one government by means of a common cause. . .It is the reoccurring dream - or is it a nightmare? When we think of all the great political leaders who have united peoples we find frightening similarities: tyranny, cruelty, murder, violation of human rights, and gross immorality. Do we even need to speak of the horrors under the reign of men such as Nero, Pol Pot, Hitler, and Stalin? Why does the pursuit for peace always end in war and death? Why has mankind failed at creating a benevolent government for its 6000 years of existence?

There are several reasons. The first answer is found in the Garden of Eden - man's fallen nature. Man apart from God cannot but choose evil. When man is given absolute power without accountability, he invariably chooses evil. Man's nature and tendency for selfish and sinful choices requires him to have accountability, an external source of moral law, and consequences for violating that law.

The second reason for man's failure for global peace is found on the hands of the first murderer, Cain . When men are consumed by evil and filled with themselves, they lose respect for human lives. It is God's laws that place value on life . When evil men achieve absolute power, their subjects become pawns and blood flows in rivers.

The third reason is found in the first attempt at unifying man, the Tower of Babel . That reason is this: God is in control and will thwart any attempt of human sovereignty. There will be no world peace until the reign of Christ after the Great Tribulation. The story of Babel begins in maybe Genesis 11. The account is actually only 9 verses long. It seems that man had gathered together to build a tower which would reach to heaven. Perhaps they thought they could overthrow God when they got there, or maybe Nimrod , the probable leader, did not believe in God at all, but used the tower as a way to focus the people under his leadership. God however, stepped in and created a gap between men that we still struggle to bridge today: He confounded their language so they could not understand one another. With this division came distinction in culture, religion and geography. It is also interesting to note that God has miraculously and temporarily bridged the chasm between languages on only one occasion - the propagation of the gospel in Acts chapter 2 when every man heard them speak in their own tongue. Man can only be united when Christ is his head.
