Winter's EvergreensThe majority of wintergreen species can be found within the Pyrolacea family which is further divided into different genera including the actual wintergreen genus, Pyrola L. Here we find plants with common names like American, Liverleaf, and Greenflowered Wintergreen. Not included in the genus Pyrola L. are still more species of wintergreens, with one very notable plant. Chimaphila maculata, with it's rather unusual leaves, is appropriately called Striped Wintergreen. Chimaphila comes from the Greek words 'winter' and 'to love'.
If your not one of those rare few that love winter but tend to feel a little blue during the season, not to worry. Like wintergreens that flower in the spring and summer, we too will find ways to bloom during the new year.
May 2002 be a happy one.
