9) Install my downloaded software WITH my registration keys!

10) Install my backups (as I only have a zip drive). I had backed up crucial documents only (basically everything in the "My Documents" folder, plus my ICQ settings).

Apart from a few odd files I got back from friends (Thanks Buffy, Thanks Reggie!) - that was about it - I was back up and running. I guess the process took a few hours (excluding download time).

Did I learn from any of this? You bet!

Here is what I'm now doing so that if this happens again, I can do a clean install even quicker!

Copy the files I downloaded and store them on a zip disk (use floppies if you don't have a zip drive).

Make a list of all registration keys so that if I DO have to download programs, I can easily restore my registered programs!

Carry on making regular backups!

The tendency when this happens is to panic, but if you sit down calmly and follow through the list (use the above as an example), you can recover from a disaster much more simply than could have been the case!

Is there a positive thing about this happening? Yes there is! I now have a much cleaner system that's not only faster but also simpler to use!

Till next week!
