Tricks and Tips in Windows 95As a web site developer, I run a survey on my page asking people what they would like to see more of and this week's article looks at some of the things people have asked for. It's a bit of a mixed bag this week, so hopefully there will be something for everyone! Quick Tips and Tricks Here's a selection of tips and tricks. Passwords People often seem to forget passwords and with today's systems, it seems you need lots of them! I generally stick to one or two passwords that I create myself. That is, rather than using real words, I create my own - often made up and not found in a dictionary. People won't be able to guess these very easily as they are not real words (at least, I don't think they are). Here are some examples (and before anyone asks or tries, these are NOT any of my current passwords!) toshick hoopiya kwookie spoggy The idea is to make the words sound as daft as possible - that way you will remember them! Start Up Programs I use a number of programs that I want run every time I load Windows 95. Thing is, I want the programs to automatically open a particular file. Placing the program icon in the start up group loads the program but not the file. Answer? Place the file in the start up group and the program that is associated with the file will open and load my file automatically! Typing E-mail Addresses I get a lot of technical support calls from people all over the world and most come from my web site. You complete a form on my web site and my server sends me an e-mail with the information that has been entered. One of those items is the e-mail address. Some people have quite strange addresses and some are quite long. I don't have the time or inclination to (mis-)type these addresses. Answer? Highlight the address and press CTRL and the 'C' key to copy and then press CTRL and the 'V' key with the cursor in the e-mail address to paste it. I never type a whole e-mail address! Don't forget copy and paste. It is one of the most useful and powerful features of Windows! Windows Explorer We all use it at some time or another - usually to copy or move files from one place to another. Here are some quick tips.. When moving or copying a file to a location that does not appear on screen, click and drag the file to the top of the left hand frame or the bottom of the frame and Windows Explorer will automatically scroll in that direction. This gives you access to folders that are not visible.
