Tackling the Taskbar - Part 2

This week's article looks at using the Start Menu Programs option. The article looks at the following things:

  • Adding programs

  • Removing programs

  • Using the Advanced option

  • Moving things around

  • Amending shortcut properties for DOS games

Adding Programs

To start off, it is necessary to call up the Start Menu Programs which is available by clicking Start...Settings...Taskbar and Start Menu...Start Menu Programs.

Why would we need to use this?

It is necessary sometimes as not all programs install program icons (particularly old programs or some shareware titles). In these cases, when you want to run the program from a menu, you need to add the icon yourself.

Follow these steps to do it:

  1. Click on the 'Add' button.

  2. The next screen asks for the 'Command Line'

This is the name of the program and any arguments it needs in order to run. Usually, programs that require arguments are DOS programs (such as games). These programs use a PIF (program information file) which contains these details.

It is easiest to click on the 'Browse' button and search for the file. Note that this is likely to be a .EXE, .COM, .BAT, .APP or .PIF file. DOS (games) tend to use a .PIF or .BAT file to run. Windows applications tend to use .EXE files (these will show up as an 'application' if you use the 'Details' setting in the explorer window that appears).

Once the program file has been found, click on the 'Next' button.

  • The computer then needs to know which menu this item is to appear under. You can create a new folder to store this item if you wish. Click once on the menu name that you want the item to appear under, then click the 'Next' button

  • You are now asked to enter a name for the shortcut (menu item). Enter a suitable name. Note that, by default, the system places the program name in this screen, but you do not have to accept this. Note also that you are NOT renaming the program only the shortcut. Once done, click the 'Next' button.

  • If your program does not contain its own icon (DOS programs, old software for example), you will be presented with a screen of icons from which to choose from. This is displayed alongside the menu item name as with all menu items within Windows 95. Take your pick and click on the 'Finish' button. You shortcut will now be ready for use.

Removing Programs

To remove an item from a menu, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the 'Remove' button of the Start Menu Programs screen.
