The Power of the Little Green Flower!

This week's article looks at the current issues that are causing problems with ICQ - I Seek You, fast becoming THE message program on the Internet.

Registration

Once you have downloaded ICQ it is necessary to register ICQ in order to get you own ICQ number (UIN - Unique Individual Number). This is causing some problems as it seems to take forever to do or they get a timed out error.

ICQ is currently being downloaded at the rate of 140,000 copies A WEEK! This figure has been as high as 200,000 so as you can imagine there have been a LOT of people trying to register.

The best way to do this is to:

Keep trying!

Try registering at odd times of the day (like very early morning or very late at night)

Avoid the 7 p.m. time slot, as this is the time that everyone logs onto the Internet and generally slows things down.

Ensure you are not running your browser or e-mail client whilst trying to register. These will slow modem transmission and reduce your chance of registering.

Huge ICQ!

For some strange reason, if you drag the ICQ contact list to the far right hand side of the screen, ICQ will fill the whole screen from top to bottom causing other applications to maximise into a smaller area. This means that you can have ICQ on screen the whole time without obscuring other windows. Most people do not seem to want this!

To return ICQ to a more manageable form, click the left mouse button inside the contact list and drag to the left. This will release ICQ from the right edge and return the contact list to a more reasonable size.

ICQ and AOL

This combination seems to be rather problematical for lots of people. It is most likely due to the fact that AOL are trying to launch their own message program - AOL messenger. Here are some tips for AOL users wanting to use ICQ.

Ensure you use version 3.00 of AOL. ICQ will not work with earlier versions.

Do not use the AOL browser - use Internet Explorer or Netscape. The AOL browser seems to have problems with a few areas of the web so using IE or Netscape will allow you greater freedom on the Web.

ICQ Settings

If you are running your PC from home or it is a single PC not linked by a network, then you DO NOT run behind a firewall. Firewalls are methods used by networks (usually company or educational institutions) that prevent outsiders gaining access to their network but allowing their users access to the Internet.
