This week's article looks at some of the more common problems that people have with ICQ — I Seek You. An ever increasingly popular Internet messaging program. For some time now, I have been providing technical support and many queries have been for ICQ.

This article covers the common problems that people have — and how to solve them! Also included are some direct links to the Mirabilis home site for quick reference. These make it easier to find some of the more sought after pages.

Question: I've lost my password. What do I do?

Answer: A common question. There is only one way to get your password back and that is to go to the Password page of the Mirabilis site. Here you can provide details and get your forgotten password.

Since we're talking of passwords, here are a few things to remember about them.

1). Make your password memorable.

2). Do not pick obvious passwords like your wife's maiden name, husband's favourite team or your kids' names. These are too obvious. Use something a little more cryptic. I often use character names of books I've read or place names (though avoid your home town!).

3). Passwords are usually case sensitive so Chris is not the same as chris or CHRIS.

4). Do not store your password(s) on your computer. It is possible for a hacker to find these (in theory anyway).

5). Don't use a meaningless series of letters and numbers. Trying to remember xRb2y7hp is asking a bit much!

Question: I can't get or stay connected to ICQ. What should I do?

Answer: This is a common event in ICQ but one that is easily solved. Within ICQ, there is the facility to specify a list of servers that you can get ICQ to connect to. Usually, this problem occurs when you only have one or two servers listed. A quick plug for my site — the PC Support Page — has a list of ICQ servers that you can connect to (along with full instructions on how to do this). Just follow the ICQ page link.

Question: I use Windows 3.#. Can I use ICQ?

Answer: Yes. However, you do need to have a special file downloaded on to your system. The file is WIN32S and, in very simple terms, fools 32-bit programs into thinking they are running in a 32-bit environment when Windows 3.# is only 16 bit.

You may also need to check your dialler software (software that connects you to the Internet). Do this by checking the Windows 3.1 page at Mirabilis.
