More solutions to your problems...My inbox seems to bulging again with tech support email, so perhaps its time I did another article on common problems and how to resolve them! Problem: I get intermittent errors when I boot up or shutdown windows I can sympathise with this one as it happens on my system too. Usually this is because I have been messing with the internals of my machine. It is a problem that can occur when the system registry is updated - particularly when changing drivers. When Windows 9x and particularly 98 loads, a lot of drivers are loaded. These drivers are small pieces of code that control how Windows talks to your hardware. Windows 98 loads these as and when needed (virtual device drivers) and changes in settings can upset the balance. What is needed is a clean start-up and shutdown as this writes the registry safely to disk. To get your machine working, carry out the following steps: · Boot up in Safe Mode · Run the REGCLEAN utility that clears the system registry of errors. · Reboot · Once you are in the proper desktop, shutdown. If problems persist, close all loaded problems by pressing ALT + CTRL + DEL to bring up the task manager and closing down all non-needed programs. You should NOT close down Explorer or SysTray. · Your system should boot properly now. If it doesn't, check the Control Panel... System applet to check and see if any devices are having problems This is tedious but it should bring your system back up and running properly. Problem: I have a program that loads on start up that I can't get rid of - even though I have uninstalled it Some programs just won't go away - or maybe you don't want them loading (perhaps because you want to run a memory intensive program). Fear not! There is a very simple solution to this! Go to the Start menu and select Run Program. Enter msconfig and click on OK. This will run a configuration program that lets you alter kinds of settings. On the far right is a tab marked Start-up. Click this tab and you will see a list of all the programs that load on start up. That is - all the programs that are in your Sys Tray as well as other programs that get loaded. There will be a check mark indicating that this program will be loaded. To stop a program from running, uncheck the box by clicking the entry. When you have finished, you will need to reboot your machine. On the return you will see that the programs that were unchecked have not been loaded.
