Ever one for the easy way of doing things, this article focuses on the simple little things in Windows 95 that can make Life easier. There are two main areas to this article, a 'Hints and Tips' and a 'Did you Know?' To make things easier they are grouped by topic so that a 'tip' may also have a 'did you know' attached to it. That way, it keeps things together!
Windows Explorer Love it or hate it we all have to use it! Here are some interesting items for you! Copying and Moving Files Did you know? If you select a file and drag it to another folder on the same drive, the file will be moved by default. Drag it to another disk and it will be copied. Did you know? You can tell whether the file is being moved or copied by looking at the mouse pointer when you have dragged the file to its' destination (just before releasing the mouse button). If the pointer includes a plus (+) symbol, then the file is being copied. No plus symbol means the file is being moved. You can force a copy by holding down the Control (CTRL) key during the dragging process. A move can be forced by holding down the SHIFT key during the dragging process. Want to copy or move a file to the floppy disk? Try selecting the file and pressing the right mouse button. Select 'Send to' to transfer the file. Try it there are more places to send a file than just your floppy disk! Is the place you want to copy or move a file out of reach not in the window view? Drag the file to just below the top line on the left-hand side window and the folder view will scroll up. Hold there until you find the directory you want. Drag the file to just above the bottom line of the folder window to scroll down. This is VERY useful for people who are used to using Windows 3. #. Did you know? A plus (+) symbol to the left of a folder name means there are sub-folders beneath? Double click to see the folders below the folder with a plus symbol. On the file list screen click on the button bars Name, Size, Type and Modified to sort the list in ascending order. Click once more to sort in descending order. Can't see all the file details? Move the mouse to the edge of a button in the file list window. You mouse will change from an arrow to a vertical bar with left and right arrows. Click and drag the mouse to change the width of a column of information. That is, to increase the width of the Name column, move the mouse to the right edge of the Name button, click and drag right. The Name column will increase in width allowing you to see more of the file name.
