Did You Know?Did you know? The term "Bugs" meaning errors in programs relates to the old mainframes that used valves and cables. The valves produced heat providing a warm environment for insects. These insects often chewed through cables causing the computer to malfunction. Did you know? The 3.5" disk is the dimension it is so that it will fit into a shirt pocket. (Try it) Did you know? My first PC (an original 8086) had a 20MB hard drive and I LOTS of space to play with! Did you know? The fist IBM PC had 64KB (yes Kilobytes) of memory, no hard disk, a green monochrome screen and 5.25" floppy drives. Did you know? A laser printers' "laser" places a positively charged ion on to a highly polished steel drum. The positively charged areas of the drum attract negatively charged ink particles which is then "pressed" onto the paper. The ink is made permanent by using heat. This melts the ink onto the paper. If there were no heat, your page would be covered in black powder that would come off onto your hands. Did you know? You're hard disk spins at around 6000 - 7000 rpm. Your washing machines spin cycle is anywhere between 1100 and 1300 rpm. Did you know? The disk heads in a hard drive don't actually touch the disk. They float microns above the surface. If they touched, the friction from the disk would melt the drive heads. Did you know? The gap between a drive head and the hard disk is less than the amount of grease you leave behind when you touch something. A smoke particle or a human hair would be like boulders. Did you know? The film "Toy Story", made completely from computer graphics took 5.5 Terabytes of storage (1 Terabyte = 1024 Gigabytes). Did you know? Some of the scenes in Toy Story took 20 SPARC stations up to 35 hours to render a single frame. Did you know? The Romans could never have invented computers. They had no number for zero. Did you know? You can store all the text of the Holy Bible on a single floppy disk. Did you know? The first video game was called "Pong" it consisted of a "bouncing ball" going from side to side. Players prevented the ball going past their paddle - table tennis fashion. Did you know? Someone wrote an entire chess program in under 1-KILOBYTE! That's 1024 characters! It was for the "1 Kay Wonder" The ZX81.
