Holiday Cookie Party

Holidays are special times, filled with laughter and fun, family and friends, and lots of good food. I remember Mom, my sister, and I would spend hours in the kitchen baking and decorating cookies when I was a kid. These days a lot of us don't have the kind of time all that baking takes. A great way to have different varieties of tasty cookies and enjoy a holiday gathering at the same time is to host a cookie exchange party. Invite friends and family members over for an afternoon. Ask everyone to bake a two dozen of their favorite holiday cookie, and to bring the recipe. If possible, ask them to bring enough copies for everyone. You all get together for a fun time and share the cookies! This is a great way to celebrate the holidays in an informal way, and gather new recipes at the same time. Everyone benefits! It's also a simple party for the host. You can have some munchies or finger foods if you like, but that's totally up to you. What you should have is a selection of beverages to go along with the inevitable cookie nibbling. Coffee, hot chocolate, and hot, spiced cider are perfect for a cold, winter afternoon. Egg Nog or mulled wine are nice holiday choices, and spring water and iced tea would be good cold selections to have on hand. Also, provide enough zip lock storage bags for everyone to take home cookies in, and blank recipe cards and pens in case there aren't enough copies to go around. This would also be a fun gathering for families. The kids will love sampling and picking out their favorite cookies to take home. Add regular and chocolate milk to the beverage list for the little ones. Put up your favorite holiday decorations, set out some candles and festive scented potpourri, and some holiday paper napkins, and you're all set! This could become a holiday tradition! Here's one of my favorite holiday cookies:

Peanut Blossoms

1 3/4 c Flour 1 ts Baking soda 1/2 ts Salt 1/2 c Margarine 1/2 c Peanut butter 1/2 c Sugar 1/2 c Brown sugar 1 Egg 1 ts Vanilla Sugar Hershey kisses - unwrapped

Preheat oven to 375. Mix flour, baking soda and salt. Set aside. Soften butter and mix with peanut butter. Add sugars gradually until creamy and well-blended. Beat in egg and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture. Roll into one-inch balls, and roll balls in sugar. Bake on ungreased cookie sheets for 12 minutes. As soon as you take the cookies off the cookie sheet, press an unwrapped kiss into the top of each warm cookie.
