It's that time of year again. Hay rides to choose the most perfectly shaped pumpkin for carving, choosing the best and most unique costume, clutching a friend's hand through the eerie haunted houses/trails/etc. to show you're not a scaredy cat, fun Halloween parties for school so that everyone can preview your costume, house Halloween parties, and of course, the big night of trick or treating! This is the checklist that most kids count on. This season we will try to help out with ideas for frightenly fun activities, terrifying treats, and spooky decorating. I have included links as well to the best spots on the web for homemade costume ideas and more! Here are a few ideas... more will be coming soon...so check back!

TIP #1: For the big night of trick or treating:

Have one parent "man" the house to hand out treats. Make a big pot of chili (let simmer in the crock pot)- this is the best for warming up after a Halloween's night chill. Serve mulled cider and bread for dipping.

TIP #2: Not-so-scary Haunted House:

Load your stereo with back to back 'scary sounds" music to set the mood...

Drape white sheets over furniture to give your house a 'condemned' look... *this will also help keep furniture clean*

Purchase old drapes that fit your windows at a consignment shop. Tatter edges and rip to look battered.

Fake spiderwebs are a pain to use, but give a great effect. Put them everywhere you can.

Ask someone to dress as a fortune teller to tell fun and light fortunes. Give her a small fabric covered table and a gazing globe on a small stand to gaze into.

Place unsavory looking plastic critters peering underneath chairs, etc...

Line sidewalk with lit Jack 'O Lanterns...

Make 'alien' outlines on the driveway or sidewalk, using glow-in-the-dark sidewalk chalk.

Have children walk through the "scary" area to the kitchen area, where they are served spooky concoctions...see TIP #3.

TIP #3 Spooky concoctions: Here are some fun kid friendly recipes perfect for a children's Halloween party.

Wormy Cups To make Wormy Cups, you'll need Oreo cookies, chocolate pudding, clear plastic cups, and gummy worms! Prepare pudding as directed on package. Cover and refrigerate. Next, crush Oreos until they resemble a pile of dark brown dirt. When pudding is ready, put a spoonful of crushed Oreo in bottom of each clear cup. Next layer of pudding. Alternate pudding and Oreos until near top of cup. Add a couple gummy worms to each cup.
