It is that time of year again! Aw....dontcha feel special??? ANYWAY... The book I chose to review is The Parrot in Health and Illness: an owner's guide by Bonnie Munro Doane. This selection was easy, because I think this book is a "must have" for every parrot owner. The reason it fits my idea of a great book is easily understood once you pick it up: it is well written, covers the subject of parrot health in a concise, complete manner, and is easy to understand. I don't know about you guys, but that is important to me. The best information in the world isn't worth anything to me if I can't comprehend its meaning. So, to me, this book is practically perfect. The author, Bonnie Munroe Doane, is a noted parrot authority. If you have the chance, you might also want to pick up another book by her. Her work with parrots include several endangered species, including the Cuban Amazons and Queen of Bavaria Conures. Now, to the "meat" of the subject: the book! The Parrot in Health & Illness covers major diseases, common conditions, emergency first aid, avian surgery, how to select (and the importance of) an avian vet, AND it has sections on how to tell a well bird from a sick bird. The author also included information on necropsy and bird death (with a discussion on the stages of grieving included in this chapter), two subjects most parrot owners don't like to think about, but always have to face, sooner or later. In all the areas I listed above, the author deals with the subject in a thorough sequence, easily tying the facts together in a comprehensive manner. I especially liked the sections on the well bird versus the sick bird. This discussion added much to my understanding of my parrot and his needs. So....pick up the book! It is well worth it.
