It's the first weekend of summer. Schools are closing, and kids are spending more time outside. It's the time of year when kids are apt to be involved with unorganized athletic-type activities, so let's just consider this column to be a reminder in safety.
Wearing Helmets: In my state, it is a law that kids 12 and under are to wear helmets whenever riding a bike, scooter, roller blades, or anything on wheels. Yet, there are a growing number of children who aren't following that law. I'll be honest. I'm not a big fan of wearing helmets myself, but I always put one on when I ride (and I ride to work every day), as does my husband. We know of at least one adult who died because he crashed and landed on his unhelmeted head. Kids are often reckless when they ride and more likely to wipe out. And don't forget that helmets should cover the forehead, not be pushed towards the back of the head. Stay Away from the Water: Public pools are watched by trained lifeguards and have enough people swimming that an accident can usually be caught quickly. Most people with backyard pools know the risks and have their rules in place (don't forget to enforce them!!). But kids need firm rules about playing in creeks, ponds, lakes, and other unprotected water areas. Street Smarts: A ball or a Frisbee flies out into the street, and a kid chases it without stopping or looking for cars. In our neighborhood, we've assigned the oldest kid or an adult who is outside to be the official ball chaser. Also, to drivers, PLEASE drive slowly and safely. Have a safe summer everyone!
