Kids and PitchingPitching is a sticky issue in youth baseball. How much should kids be pitching? When can they begin throwing breaking pitchings (ie, curve balls) safely? This link to MedWeb http://www.hvmedweb.com/mw1/qanda/baseba... provides solid answers from a number of orthopedic surgeons, who encourage about 6 innings per week with sufficient rest in between games. For example, if an 11-year-old is pitching 3 innings in a game, he shouldn't pitch again for another 3 days. The doctors on this site also recommend that a child who wants to pitch curve balls be fully developed, otherwise injury can more easily occur. In Tips for Youth Baseball http://ed-web3.educ.msu.edu/ysi/Spotligh... there is discussion on how to properly pitch and how to effectively use change of speed rather than using breaking pitches. And finally, if you and your child think it is time to start throwing curve balls, do it properly at http://ed-web3.educ.msu.edu/ysi/Spotligh...
