Golf Terms

No secret that Tiger Woods has caused a surge in kids who want to play golf, especially now that he has accomplished the Tiger Slam.

Unfamiliar with that term? The Tiger Slam is the name the media came up with to describe Woods's holding the four majors titles at once but not doing it within a calendar -- or golf season -- year.

The Tiger Slam is a play on the Grand Slam, which in turn is a description of the four majors: The PGA, The Masters, The US Open, and the British Open. That is one of the terms I do understand. However, despite being familiar with the words "birdie" and "bogey" and "eagle" in golf, I was never quite sure of their exact definition.

Knowing that not everyone golfs and that lots of kids are interested in the sport because of Tiger Woods, I thought I'd go searching for the definitions of these golf terms.

According to the World Book site (http://www.worldbook.com/fun/golf/html/l... a birdie is one shot under par for a hole; a bogey is a score of one over par for a hole; and an eagle is two shots under par for the hole. Par is the pre-determined number of shots it should take to finish a hole. So, a par 4 hole would mean (in scoring terms), 2 shots is an eagle, 3 is a birdie, 4 is even par, and 5 would be a bogey. (I'm already feeling like an expert!)
