I've been fascinated with ice hockey lately - well, since last winter, when my husband and I went to see a professional hockey game. I had never been to an NHL game before, and I've been hooked. While I was at that game, though, I was embarrassed by how ignorant I was of the play on the ice. So, for the past year, I've been searching for all the information I can find, both on-line and bombarding some email friends whose sons play the sport. I'd love for my own son to play hockey, but he's a basketball guy in the winter.
Last week, ESPN turned their Sunday Hockey Night into a Sunday Hockey Night Tutorial. I wish I would have known about it before that weekend; I would have written this column sooner, for all of you parents who feel as helpless about the action on the ice as I do. As I did, I should say. Kudos to ESPN for taking this complex, fast-paced game and making it easy for novices to understand. If you missed the game and its definition graphics, "http://espn.go.com/nhl/rules/index.html" NHL Rules is a great website that ESPN put together. At your finger tips you can find out the most important information about hockey terms and rules. "http://www.azhockey.com/"A-Z Hockey is another very informative site, but one that will tell you more than you ever imagined you wanted to know. A great site for young budding hockey stars who want to learn about their favorite players in almost any league. One thing about hockey is I get tired just watching it. I have a lot of respect for hockey players; they are fantastic athletes. Anyone who has read my columns knows that I am big on "http://nimbus.ocis.temple.edu/~thagan/"proper training and conditioning, and hockey requires an athlete to be in excellent shape. I'm having a lot of fun finding interesting hockey sites. Next time, I'll focus on the many leagues of youth hockey. Go To Page: 1
