Let's put in a yard; with two 1-year olds running around!?

Who knows how hard it is to get a dirt lot ready to put grass in? Who know how hard this is with two 1-year old twins in the house? Well, I’m here to tell you – it’s almost impossible. It is doable, but very, very hard.

We moved into our house because of the big yard “possibility”. What we lived with for 6 months, was a big “dirt” lot. Since we moved into the house in November, we only had to deal with actual “dirt” for a few months. We had December through March with snow (and mud when the snow melted – yuck). Right after we moved in, Steve talked with our builder and found out that they were building another new house down the road. Steve asked them what they did with the dirt they take out to build the foundation. Because they just haul it away, Steve talked them into bringing 3 truckloads of this dirt to our house. They brought it and dumped it in the front yard. So, now we had 3 big piles of dirt in the front “dirt” yard and a very large “dirt” back yard.

Before we moved into the house, we had someone come in a built a fence around one side of the house (the other 2 sides were already fenced in) and across the front on both sides. This same person also put in the sprinkler system (for the beautiful yard we would someday have). So, now we had a big fenced in “dirt” lot. The boys actually loved running around the back yard and getting very, very dirty. And, they loved climbing on the big piles of dirt in the front yard. The piles of dirt were actually great landmarks. People would ask which house we lived in and we’d say, “The grey one with the 3 piles of dirt in the front yard.”

Finally, spring arrived and we were ready for yard work. Along with the spring weather, came lots of weeds in the “dirt”. We sprayed for weeds, picked weeds, cleaned out rocks that were everywhere. Flattened high spots, had the 3 big piles of dirt brought to the back and filled in low spots. This doesn’t sound too bad, until you realize that we did this all – in half-hour to hour shifts. Remember, the two 1-year old twins running around???
