WE'RE OFF TO SOUTH DAKOTA - IT'S BAPTISM TIME!Flashback: July 19, 1986, 1st Lutheran Church, Brookings, SD. “I Steve, take you, Carrie, to be my wife.” Flashforward: November 19, 1992, 1st Lutheran Church, Brookings, SD “I Baptise you, in the name of the Father …” “Hey, Carrie!” Steve said to me one day about 7 months into the pregnancy. “We should fly to South Dakota to have the boys baptised. Our parents would really like that!” Was he serious? Flying to South Dakota with 2 little babies? Yep, he was serious; and so began plans for our trip to South Dakota for the boys baptism. We didn’t want to travel with brand new babies – but we also didn’t want to wait too long in the yar – because of South Dakota winter weather. With those two factors to consider (and the due date of October 11, probably earlier) – we picked November 19 as a tentative date for the baptism. Hopefully, the weather in South Dakota would be cooperative, the boys would be almost 2 months old and I would be healed from the cesearan!? One mistake we made was telling people we were flying with newborns! Man, did the advice come out of the woodworks: “Don’t feed them on the plane”, “Wait until you are up in the air to feed them”, “Give them a bottle when you are taking off, to help with their ears”, “Don’t buy an extra seat just for them”, “Be sure you have pacifiers for them”. The only piece we used was giving them a bottle when we took off to help with their ears. So, we made arrangements with our parents in South Dakota and with the church. Our parents were thrilled and took care of all the arrangements on their end. All we had to do was get there. We purchased 3 seats for the flight; one for each of us and one for a car seat. We figured that one baby would probably be awake and one would be asleep at any given time during the flight. Turns out that they both slept the whole time on the flight and we had some much needed rest during those hours! One piece of advice I would give anyone traveling with newborn twins is: type up all the answers to the inevitable questions that will come up and have copies to hand out. We did not and I cannot remember the number of people who asked the following questions of us. 1: Are they twins? 2: Are they boys or girls? 3: Are the identical or fraternal? 4: How much did they weigh when they were born? 5: How long did you carry them? ARGGHHHH!!!
