TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS - At home with the babies.

Apart from the first night home from the hospital and one day in between parents: the first 3 weeks we had help with the babies. We were very grateful for this, especially since we were new at this business of taking care of babies.

My Mom came on the Friday after the boys were born (we came home on Thursday) and my Dad joined us on Sunday. During their time with us, we basically tried to get ourselves organized. We tried to figure out a routine with feeding and naps. We tried to figure out the boys’ different cries and we tried to get used to the idea of being responsible for these two little human beings.

My mind is a little foggy as to what went on that first week or so, probably because I was so tired. The boys were very good at taking naps, in fact they would take long naps (1-2 hours at a time). I would try to nap at that time also; sometimes succeeding, sometimes having to forgo a nap to feed one of the boys and then the other (I was still breastfeeding at this time). That first week, I was also still recovering from the c-section. I started getting very dizzy one day and called the doctor. He wasn’t sure if it was due to the drugs I had in the hospital or if it was just because I had 2 babies and no sleep. My Mom and Steve had to carry the boys around for me, because we were all scared that I might drop one of them. I sometimes now pretend to be dizzy, just to get out of doing things with them – just joking!!

I also had a couple doctors appointments during the first couple weeks. My first appointment after getting home with the boys, I got in the car and drove to the doctors’ office. After the appointment, I got my keys out while waiting for the receptionist to schedule my next appointment. Boy did I get yelled at for driving myself to the doctor. Turns out that I could have ripped myself open very easily just by driving myself somewhere. I was promptly told to NOT drive myself anywhere for 2 more weeks! Yeah right, how was I supposed to do that? I guess it was lucky that we had so much help and so many friends willing to help out. Our best friend, Jackie, drove me to the rest of my appointments after that (she was a wonder the first few months with the boys and I will devote a whole article to her later).
