Let’s take the babies out for dinner, to the mall, to the doctor

LET'S GET ORGANIZED!

When Steve and I found out we were going to have twins - we thought, "Yikes! We are going to have to be organized." We wondered if having 2 babies would change the way we lived. Would we be going out for dinner or to the mall as often as had been? We were always very spontaneous people, always ready to drop what we were doing and head off for dinner with friends. Would we be able to do this with 2 babies in tow??

The first couple days after bring the boys home, we found out babies rule the household. We pretty much existed according to their schedule. We were organized to a point - fixing 15-20 bottles at a time, having all the diapers in one place, deciding that as soon as a baby wakes up - he gets changed and then fed. These were pretty basic organization details, but they worked. We weren't ready, however, for unexpected things.

The day of my baby shower, I had the boys fed and dressed and all ready to go out. We grabbed the diaper bag and, BAM, one of the boys spits up all over his nice blue outfit. And then, BOOM, the other one has a messy diaper. It was things like this that kept us from our carefree, spontaneous lifestyle.

One thing that kept us organized was our diaper bag. We had heard from a good friend of ours that she always made sure her diaper bag was filled with everything she needed. This way when she had to rush out of the house, she knew she had a supply of things in the diaper bag. What a great idea! So, we adopted this plan of attack. Our diaper bag was actually a backpack (a necessity since both hands were always full holding a baby or a car seat) and whenever we got home from somewhere, we automatically filled it back up with: diapers, diaper wipes, clean clothes, burp rags, etc. So, when we were heading out - all we had to grab were some bottles and we were ready to go.

Most of the time we went out with the babies - we went together, the four of us! This was easy - a baby for each. But for a long time, I wasn't sure about going out alone with the babies. But that didn't last too long, because I had things to do out of the house. I ended up taking them to the grocery store alone, to the doctor alone, to the mall alone, to lunch alone (with a friend), to bowling alone, to the mall alone, etc. Once I got over the fear of being away from home by myself with them - I was fine and I had my pre-packed diaper bag with me the whole way.
