Breastfeeding Twins – It is Possible Right?

I always thought breastfeeding would be the most natural thing in the world. HA! Was I wrong!

My breastfeeding escapade ... fiasco ... attempt started in the hospital. The night the boys were born, I was in no condition to breastfeed anybody, so the nurses fed the boys formula and sugar water. The next morning I mentioned to the nurses that I was planning on breastfeeding the boys. A fact, I found out, that they didn't know. So they brought the boys in for me to feed them and it didn't work. It turns out that I had not the foggiest idea of what to do. I was totally amazed and devastated. Breastfeeding was hard and not the easiest, most natural thing to do in the world. So for another day, the boys had formula.

The next day the nurses took me to a room and introduced me to: The Breast Pump! The idea was that the pump would get my milk flowing and I would be able to feed my children. The breast pump didn't really work that well - I filled a 6 oz. bottle or so and that was it. So they took that bottle and fed half to each baby. The next step was to introduce me to a lactation specialist. This woman was wonderful. She showed me how to get the milk flowing from my breasts. She helped me figure out how to hold the babies so they could latch on. She showed me various positions that the babies could lie and still feed. She also told me (as I was in tears trying to feed one of the babies) that the babies could detect my anxiety and it would affect how they fed.

That night I fed the boys and the nurses took them away so I could get some sleep. They brought them back later and said they were still hungry. So I fed them again! The next morning, I was told that the babies were so hungry that they supplemented them with formula. I was very angry, but what could I do?? The last day, Alec fed right on schedule. He really liked breastfeeding and latched on really well. Logan on the other hand, just never got the hang of breastfeeding and we had to supplement him throughout the last day with formula and sugar water. I ended up breastfeeding Logan a total of 3 times.

When we finally got the boys home, I was worried about Logan because he had not had anything to eat for awhile. So I breastfed him for the last time and he fed for about half an hour. Then, of course, it was Alec's turn. That night Alec fed fine, but Logan just didn't want the breast at all. Thank God we had some sample formula and sugar water from the hospital. The next day we decided to get some formula for Logan and I would continue to breastfeed Alec. We also decided that I would pump milk for Logan and Alec both so other people besides me could feed them.
