ARE YOU TWINS?

"Are you twins?" I am actually amazed when people ask my boys this question.

But, why am I amazed? It's because in my eyes they don't look alike at all! They are two completely different looking individuals. They look no more alike than any other two siblings! Or do they???

In the last 11 years, we have heard varying comments on my boys' "Twinness" (is that a word, I don't know - but you get the idea). We have heard: "they look so much alike", "they don't look anything alike at all", "the older they get, the less they look alike", "the older they get, the more they look alike". Well, which is it?

At last night's baseball game, the coach from the other team asked them if they were twins. Alec was at third base and Logan was way out in left field. How could you see their similarities that far away? Is there a sameness between them that I don't see?

Since they were babies, I had no problem telling them apart. This was partly due to the fact that Logan weighed almost 2 pounds more than Alec; but also because, to me, they looked different. People used to ask me how I could tell them apart and I would say, "How do you tell me and you apart?" That would get them to thinking. So, to my husband and me, Alec and Logan have never looked alike. Sure there are similarities; but there are more differences than similarities. Their hair color is different, they are not the same height, they are not the same weight, they run different, they walk different, they have different noses, different eye shapes, different ears, I could go on and on. So what is it that makes strangers ask if they are twins? Because other than being boys about the same height - they do not look alike.

This something that all parents of twins are going to be faced with, complete strangers looking at your children and asking if they are twins (unless they are identical, then it's pretty obvious). I get tired of it sometimes, but mostly I like when people ask if they are twins. Partly I like it, because people are way nicer to me and treat me better (I think it's because they feel sorry for me - or maybe it's admiration - who knows). I often hear, "I couldn't imagine having twins" or "I always wanted twins."
