I’M SORRY, I CAN’T GO TO DINNER - I’VE JUST HAD A BABY

© Carrie Webbenhurst

Once you have a baby, you can no longer go out for dinner, watch a movie or visit with friends. Right? All you'll be able to do is take care of the baby. The baby will consume your every waking moment. Right?

This is what some people have been telling my friend who is expecting any day. They are telling her that once her baby arrives - her life, as she knows it, is over.

BALONY!!!!!!!

Sure, there are things you have to change in your life to accommodate a baby. Things like: your sleep schedule and how your house is arranged. But, you can still do a lot of the things you used to do - you just have an extra person to take along with you.

AND, if you have twins - it's no different; you just have two extra people to take.

So, what's the key to having a baby (or twins) and still being able to go places with that baby? ORGANIZATION!!!

We were not totally organized when we had our boys, but one thing we always did, was have our diaper bag packed and ready to go. This is my one big hint to new parents about how to continue doing things like going out to dinner.

Our diaper bag was always packed and ready to head out the door. It always had: diapers, wipes, burp rags, blankets, change of clothes and toys (and later baby food, snacks, books, etc.). Whenever we would get home from being out, we would replenish whatever we had used in the diaper bag. This way we were always ready to head out the door.

I can hear people already saying, "Well, that's ok with one baby, but you had twins!" No difference - just make sure your diaper bag is always ready to go (our diaper bag was a backpack, so we had two arms open and it was big enough to have everything you needed to two babies).

We took our boys to dinner, to the mall, to a bar (once), to concerts (actually Ice Capades), to church. I took them by myself to lunch, to see Steve at work, to the mall, to church, to meet friends, to the grocery store. With twins the only thing you have to remember is that everyone wants to ooh and aah over them. So, you have to factor in extra time wherever you go.

So, if you want to continue to go out to dinner or to a movie, remember the following: organization and the Boy Scout motto: BE PREPARED!!! You should be able to take your kids just about anywhere!!

Thank you for dispelling the myth that those with babies will live the life of a shut-in! Nothing is further from the truth, and, I found, it is better for the baby to be taken along outside the hous ...
