SPORTS AND SAME OR DIFFERENT TEAMS

I am reminded of a cartoon I saw once in the paper. A wife is giving a list to her husband. The list states the time and place each of their 3 children is to be dropped. The husband asks, "What do I do after I drop them all off?" "Pick them all up again," states the wife.

We have never had this problem - knock on wood. Up to this point, Alec and Logan have always been on the same hockey, swim team and baseball teams. I really couldn't imagine running one child to one place and having another child have to be somewhere else at the same time. We haven't put ourselves in that position, except for summer sports camp one time. Logan decided he wanted to go to Tennis camp and Alec wanted to attend baseball camp. I would drop Alec off a few minutes early (making sure the coach was already there) and then head to the other location and drop Logan off. Lucky for me, each camp lasted 3 hours and I wasn't running back and forth.

With twins, I would highly recommend (if you can) having them both on the same sports team - always! I realize that both kids may not be interested in the same sport. In that case, I have no advice for you other than making sure to nurture their individuality and get organized. We have friends who have 4 kids (no multiples) and last summer they were running everywhere taking each different child to a different place all day long. This summer, they deliberately put the 2 boys who play baseball on the same team. I don't blame them one bit. Another friend was just telling me about having to run her daughter out to her softball game (20 minutes away) and then turn around and run her son to his roller hockey game. My question is - which child does she watch? Therein is another plus for having them both on the same team - you can watch all their games. I guess until one can no longer do it - having both kids on the same sports team - is the only way to go.

Sports in general. I highly recommend every child be involved in sports in some way. I really hate to think what our kids would be like if they weren't involved in sports (or any extra-curricular activity for that matter). Sports are such a great way for them to learn sportsmanship, teamwork, fitness, and discipline. They also learn about following rules, criticism, listening to what a coach has to tell them, taking turns, defeat and victory. My boys started on a swim team when they were 6, hockey and baseball when they were 7 and now are interested in Basketball, Football and track. If you think your child wants to try a sport, school sports are the way to go. Most school sports have a short season (6 weeks or less); compared with ice hockey that goes from September to March. My thoughts are: any one can endure something for 6 weeks. When the boys were in 1st grade, they tried wrestling. Alec was good at this sport and Logan was there for the social values of it. The season was 6 weeks long and although neither of them has pursued this sport - they tried it! What more can you ask of your children?
