FIRST TRIP TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM

“Hello, Mrs. Webbenhurst,” said the nurse in the Emergency room. “I see we’re back again!”

That is what we figured our lives would be like 2 boys. Especially 2 boys who are sports nuts! Turns out – we’ve only been to the emergency room 3 times in the last 10 1/2 years. 2 times with Alec for croup and 1 time with Logan for a cut to his face (note – not all injuries require trips to theER).

My advice for trips to the emergency room – DON’T PANIC! Yeah right, like you wouldn’t panic when you are heading to the hospital.

Let’s flash back to the 1st visit. Croup – a very scary thing for your kids to have! When Logan had a high fever, I was the one to freak out; so I figured when something really bad happened – I would freak out again. NOT – we all freaked! Alec wakes up with a horrible barkie cough. I go in to check on him and he is having a hard time breathing. Freak out! Scream for Steve, he calls the nurse and I try to comfort Alec – while getting dressed. Do you know how hard it is to get dressed holding a 2 year old who is freaking out? I lay Alec down and he starts freaking out and gasping for breath. I throw on sweats and a T-Shirt, pick up Alec, who calms down, but still gasping.

“Steve, what do we do?” I yell (which wakes up Logan, who freaks).

Doctors orders – take Alec outside in the cold air. Easy enough – except Alec freaks out every time he tries to get a deep breath and we both have to talk to him to calm him down. After about 10 minutes of this – we head to the emergency room.

Midnight – on our way to ER. All 4 of us are freaking: Logan because he is tired and doesn’t know what is happening. Alec because he can’t breath. Steve because he is driving and is worried about Alec and me because I’m trying to calm down all 3 and I am worried about Alec.

Skip ahead 2 hours – Alec gets an x-ray and has had some breathing treatments. Steve is lying on the hospital bed holding Alec. Alec relaxes and breathes ok; then he gets scared and has a hard time breathing. I talk to him to calm him down and he relaxes again.
