Tips for Tutoring Your Teen in Reading


you listen, watch for something to praise. Don't lie-praise is meaningless if it isn't true. Did he get more words right? Did he flow the words better? Did he get through it without becoming frustrated. Smile and nod as he reads. When you must correct, do it in a matter-of-fact voice and choose only one thing to correct. If he reads a word incorrectly, try to avoid saying that it is wrong. Instead, ask him if that sentence made sense. Or, ask him to go back and look at the word again. If you keep your voice light and cheerful, the process will be easier on the ego. Don't work so long that he becomes frustrated. If the student is really behind, you may need to concentrate largely on individual words. Later, you can focus on comprehension and ease of reading.
