6. Helping schools recognize intruders. This is more nonsense. Anyone can buy a uniform and put it on. In most schools, it is simply a polo shirt and dress slacks. They are available in most department stores. If a middle school student really wants to sneak on campus, he will have no trouble obtaining a uniform. History suggests it isn’t the intruders our children have to fear anyway…it’s their own classmates.

So these were their arguments, offered in a list with no explanation. This is because they trust parents to be stupid enough to read the list and say, “Oh, those are good reasons” without ever stopping to analyze them. Whenever you are offered a list like this, think about it.

In addition, you might ask yourself these questions:

1. If uniforms make people behave and become successful, shouldn’t the president force everyone to wear a uniform?

2. When I asked why teachers don’t wear them, I was told the union would never allow it-forcing teachers to wear uniforms would be abusive. (We are always so happy to make kids do what we wouldn’t do ourselves.)

3. Communism, prisons…places that like uniforms are normally places that discourage thinking. Schools are supposed to help children learn to think. If we force them to mindlessly obey random rules, we raise a nation of conformists. Can you think of one conformist who ever changed the world?

4. You are the parent. The schools have sent home a message that you are a bad parent, so they are making uniforms to force your children to do what you should have done. Are you going to put up with that?

Before you jump on the bandwagon…think about it. These two or three years are vital to your child’s future. Consider the message you are giving him.
