There's Something Funny Going On

Of all the special and unique things about my daughter, my favorite has to be her humor. Regardless of where she actually got it, I am quick to claim credit for a child who is so obviously ready to laugh and fast with a punch line.

Without a doubt she is the only person I have ever known in my life, who can find humor in almost any situation and never hesitate to laugh. I can’t say for sure whether or not it has anything to do with the fact that she has Down Syndrome; maybe it does, maybe it doesn’t. I will say that I believe she is able to recover from strained or sad situations quickly and I believe that has something to do with the extra chromosome. I guess her humor, her absolute desire to find fun and happiness in life, is just a blessing that she not only thrives on, but revels in.

The well from which she draws must be bottomless and often overflowing because she is the only six year old I’ve ever met who can somberly wait while mommy launches into a tirade about baby dolls on the floor, and then slowly fill with color as her eyes come alive with almost impish delight at the way mommy is flailing her arms around in the air. She just thinks most everything is funny and if not, she’ll make it funny. She has at least a thousand (a slight exaggeration of course) different faces, hand gestures and body movements at her disposal to lighten to mood of virtually any tense moment. I know, I know, you’re waiting for me to cite an example and truthfully I don’t know that I can convey the same kind of pure joy that shines from some special place just behind her eyes. She just has this ability to make you laugh, whether you want to or not. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that she can never be funny without actually laughing at herself. She puts her fingers up her nose in an attempt to make me laugh and ends up laughing so hard she snorts and her eyes bug out. She’s that person you know who can never get to the punch line of the joke without laughing hysterically. She anticipates the reaction she’s going to get and it just sends her over the edge. She really loves to see people laugh and smile, there’s just something about it that satisfies her.
