Parenting PositivelyDo you get tired of saying "no" all the time? Do you feel like you're criticizing your child's behavior too much? Do you wonder why your child seems to never listen? Are you frustrated? Maybe you need to change your behavior. Be more positive! First, why not treat your child the way you would like to be treated? (Yes, it's that old standard, the Golden Rule.) Show respect. Be more patient. Set a good example. Next, you might want to get some expert advice. There's an excellent article on the KidsHealth Web site titled "Nine Steps To More Effective Parenting" that contains tips to help you build up your child's self-esteem, encourage your child's "good" behavior, be consistent in disciplining your child, and more. The emphasis is on positive actions. Expert advice is also available in the Moms Online Ask The Pros section. Look at Dr. Jane Nelson's Positive Discipline article. Dr. Nelson also has her own Positive Discipline Web site. Here you'll find articles, a question and answer section, and books available for purchase. You can also subscribe to a free newsletter. Being more positive with your child may make both of you happier! By the way, I've added the KidsHealth Web site to my list of links. This is an information-filled site from the Nemours Foundation (founded by Alfred I. duPont), dedicated to improving the health of children. The site contains sections for parents, kids, and teens. Each section has articles on a variety of topics, from behavior to nutrition, safety, and more, written specifically for that age-group. The kids' section also features some health-related games. There are question-and-answer areas, too. Join me next month for more on parenting. Til then, think positive, and have a great New Year.
