One spring, Dan was outside. He ran about frolicking, then he fell down. The Thones were able to get him into his stall and called the vet, but nothing could be done.

The night Dan died, it was raining. A lantern lit the stable door where the men were inside with Dan to see if he would improve. Beauty had her head over the porch rail and Wilman was talking to her. Human and horse heard a shrill neigh that Wilman recognized as Meg's. They looked at the barn door and Wilman saw Meg. Suddenly, Dan appeared beside her and they galloped into the darkness. A few minutes later, the men came into the house and told Wilman Dan had died. They said a horse neighed when he died and that, if it wasn't Beauty who did, it must have been a horse in a nearby pasture.

After Dan died, the Thones bought horse they named Tony.

Beauty died on an August night. When the horses were put out at night, Wilman noticed that Beauty limped slightly and nosed her affectionately.

At 2:30 AM, Wilman woke up thinking she heard a shrill neigh. She thought Beauty wanted to get into the barn. Now, there was electricity and the pasture was brightly lit. She went to the south gate where Beauty always stood and stopped, stunned.

Although the south gate was out of sight, she could see Meg and Dan looking at it. Meg tossed her head, neighed, then Beauty appeared by the two horses and the trio galloped off into the darkness. Beauty had died.

In the summer of 1959, Tony became sick. One day, he staggered so badly that Wilman had a hard time getting him into the stall. She started the car to go to the neighboring farm to call the vet. When Tony heard the car start, he went wild, acting like he did not want to be left alone. Wilman left the car where he could see it, then walked to the next farm to make the call. The vet was out. His wife said she would send him to the Thone's place as soon as he returned.

Wilman returned to the barn and saw Tony pacing. When he rested, she went outside to the barnyard to watch for the vet. She could see Tony's head through the half open end of the stall. The woman heard a drumming sound in the distance that sounded like it was approaching her. Tony raised his head and appeared to be nervous. A ¾ mile lane separated the main road from the farm and she saw a cloud of dust forming. When the noise brushed past her, the air fluttered and she could smell horses. Tony reared, then fell.
